Let me start off my saying that I am a huge fan of Bill Lawrence. Scrubs was a huge part of my life for all 9 seasons that it aired and Bill is a huge inspiration to me as a screenwriter. So I was ecstatic when I heard Bill was doing a show with Kevin Biegel. When Cougar Town started it took a good half a dozen episodes before it found its groove and boy when it did it really became something special. Cougar Town is by far the best thing on television and everyone needs to be watching it. It's as close to real life as it can be and it's constantly full of heart and laughs with some of the best naturalistic writing on TV.
A big part of the show is the music, which is composed by WAZ, Will Golden, Al Sgro & Jamie Jackson. WAZ is the lead composer on this show and I reached out to him because I really wanted to talk about the music here. Scoring a quirky comedy like this has to be one of the most challenging things especially since the score here is way more than your traditional sitcom stings and transitions. Christa Miller is the music supervisor on the show and she is in charge of the song selections. WAZ and I chat about his start in music, how he found himself scoring a sitcom for Bill Lawrence, coming up with the extremely short main title and all the tidbits about Cougar Town. His dogs even stopped by while we were talking. WAZ is a great guy and the music that he, his wife Jamie and the rest of the team provide for Cougar Town has given the show a sonic identity like no other sitcom around.
