Hans Zimmer's Inception Is Incepting Every Damn Trailer On The Planet... And It Reveals A Trend In Hollywood

Okay Hollywood marketing teams and trailer houses, it's time to put the Inception rip-offs to bed. I know Hans is the genre and sound defining composer of this generation, but seriously. I love Hans Zimmer and Inception is one of his finest accomplishments, but this whole cycle is getting really old. Every action trailer that is released these days has some third party rip-off of the Inception score, and it's pissing me off. Honestly, how many times do I have to hear a "VWOOOOOOOMMMMMM" in a trailer since Inception? This is the same trend that happened after The Dark Knight, and I'm honestly interested to see if it will happen after The Dark Knight rises is released. I know Hans' music lends itself to editing and imagery like no other composer, but it needs to end. As annoying as memes are on the internet this is becoming quite annoying. We all know you wish your movies were scored by Hans (wouldn't that be great?) but can we get some creativity going here please?

Hollywood is in a creative slump; probably the worst it's ever been in the history of film. A silent film just won Best Picture for 2011, sequels and remakes dominate the release schedule and any original idea gets a chicken scratch budget. This Inception trailer phenomenon is a reflection of that. It shows that Hollywood is scared to try anything new, and I'm saying now that it's too much. Hans has unintentionally exposed Hollywood's major flaw, and that is the fear of taking risks. This industry is playing it safe; too safe. It was reflected in this year's Oscar ceremony where the whole theme was reflecting on the past including the hiring of a host whose done it 9 times. Will things change? Most likely not. Upcoming big gambles like John Carter and The Lone Ranger may flop hard and scare studios away despite quality. At least Disney is making gambles. The 2012 slate will see a 3rd Batman (reboot series), 3rd Men In Black, 5th Resident Evil, 4th Paranormal Activity, 4th Twilight, 4th Bourne, 4th Step Up, 4th Spider-Man, 4th Ice Age, 3rd Madagascar, 2nd G.I Joe, "Prequel" to Alien, Titantic re-release, Finding Nemo re-release, Monsters Inc re-release, Star Wars re-release, 3rd Diary Of A Wimpy Kid, The Hobbit, 2nd Taken, and a 3rd Halloween (reboot series). Oh and The Avengers which includes every character from Marvel films the past 5 years. We are also bound for more Transformers, Pirates, Kung Fu Panda, Avatar and others in the future. We just wrapped up 8 Harry Potter films and 4 Shreks as well (which spawned a spin-off in Puss In Boots).

So, yup. Looking at a little detail such as rehashing a score in trailers reveals all of this. Hopefully as we go through this generation shift and newer blood start getting jobs we will maybe see fresher ideas. As older executives retire will we see a jump in creativity? Time will tell, but for now every time I see an unoriginal idea or rehash all I hear is "VWOOOOOMMMM".
